Introduction & Description of Talk:

Sorry for the short notice for this meeting. We had a series of cancelations from our 1st, 2nd and 3rd tentative speakers. Given these cancelations we are going to hold an informal meeting in two parts.

The first part of the meeting will be a group discussion entitled "Getting DSL Installed". I have a good "war story" which, in affect, will be a lecture on "How to Select an ISP and when to Drop that ISP Cold." I am very curious to hear the experiences of the membership with DSL installations. There seems to be many problems in general getting DSL, but if you can manage to get it installed, its a FAST connection! We have a guest speaker from Ultinet, a DSL providor, who can fill in the details of a DSL install from the providor's point of view.

The second part of the meeting will be a discussion of a few Web Proxy Gateways for Unix. Attention will be given to using Apache and JunkBuster, with a lesser amount of information about Squid. Both Apache and Squid are caching proxy gateways. Most people know that Apache is a Web Server, but many don't realize that it can also act as a proxy gateway. The Internet Junkbuster Proxy (TM) blocks unwanted banner ads and protects your privacy from cookies and other threats. All three of these proxies are freely available.
