1. UNIGROUP'S SEPTEMBER '96 GENERAL MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

Topic: High Speed Networking Technologies

Main Presentation:

Art Tolda of Hewlett Packard will be discussing high-speed networking
technologies and their business drivers and differentiators.
Do you understand the implications of ATM? of Switching LANs? And
other new developments in high speed networking? At this meeting
Mr. Tolda will tell us about the important changes now developing
in the LAN/WAN area. His presentation will present an overview
of networking technology covering the following topics:
* Network Evolution
- Where are we?
- How did we get here?
- Traffic management topologies and technologies.
* Switching Taxonomies
- Classifications of different types of switches,
- Where they are used.
* Emerging Network Technologies
- The pluses and minuses of each.
- Virtual LANs
* Evolution and Migration Strategies to the new technologies.
Art Tolda's Bio:
----------------
Art is a Senior Information Architect for HP's Financial Services
Solution Center. Art has been active in designing information
integration solutions, and enterprise-wide and local area networks
for 18 years. Before joining HP, Art has held numerous technical
research, development and teaching positions.
Art is a practitioner of the process of integrated information
solution design and implementation and has applied the process for
our clients to provide solutions for their strategic needs. These
solutions are based on industry standards and open systems tailored
for each individual client. Solution strategies take into account
an organization's goals, critical success factors, business needs,
information and product requirements. These solutions have been
implemented in a variety of businesses including: finance, legal,
health care, sales and service, and manufacturing. Art assists
clients in developing an integration strategy and a migration path
to an Open Systems environment. Additionally, Art is a developer
and implementor of standards based network and systems management
solutions.
Some of Art's network solutions for his customers are:
* A 3000 user Security Access Network for a major financial institution.
* A 1000 node Hospital Campus Network capable of supporting real-time,
diagnostic quality medical images, at any location via ATM, to be
expanded to a state-wide implementation.
* A 900 node Hospital Campus Network capable of supporting imaging at
100 Mbps throughout the facility easily upgradeable to new advances
in networking such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and with
connections to remote clinics.
* A multi-state Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) based client-server
high access network for Citicorp's Cash Management Division including the
correction of Citicorp's global networking standards.
* A 2000 node imaging network for SASM&F's, the worlds largest
dollar-volume law firm, New York Office (a true 40 Mbps throughput
backbone) as well as their six other offices throughout the United
States that is fully ATM, FDDI, and 100VG compliant.
* Multiple high bandwidth Ethernet networks for IBM's Fishkill, NY
manufacturing site, one of which supports 2.3 Gbps of traffic per day.
* A Broadband network for a Kraft General Foods cereal manufacturing plant.
* A spread spectrum RF based wireless Ethernet network for a Kraft General
Foods sandwich meat plant.
At the request of Columbia University, Art developed and teaches
high level courses in the "Theory of Network Design" (Art has been
teaching this course since 1992), and "The Theory of Standards Based
Network and Systems Management" (since 1994).

55 Water Street is between Water Street & Front Streets at Old Slip...
about 7 blocks south of Fulton St. and the South Street Seaport.
Take 4 train to Bowling Green & Walk Due East;
Take 2/3 trains to Wall Street, Walk East to Water St.
then walk South 5 blocks;
Take M/J trains to Broad St., Walk East to Water St.;
Take N/R trains to Whitehall St., Walk North East to Water St.
There is parking on the street and there is a lot right
in the building, entrance on Old Slip.
Walking from Wall St., follow William St. south which bends around
and leads you to Hanover Sq. and Old Slip is across Water Street.
Room Location Specifics:
Enter the building at Old Slip. To get to the South Tower of the
complex, you enter the building at Old Slip at the "North Tower"
doors. This entrance is is immediately to the right of the main
entrance, towards Water Street. Go past the guard's desk (mentioning
you are heading for Unigroup) to the elevator bank and go to the 13th
floor. When you get to the 13th floor, follow the signs leading you
to the meeting room.
The signs will lead you from the elevator, through a set of doors
(soda machine will be on your left), then past the cafeteria. If the
entrance doors near the elevator on the 13th floor are locked (may
happen after 6pm), call the security desk using the available
telephone, and they will radio the guard on the 13th floor to let
you in. After the cafeteria, you see another "lobby" area. Walk
past the cash machines, make a left and look for a sign marking the
meeting room.

2. UNIX EXPO IN NEW YORK
---------------------
Unix Expo '96 is coming to N.Y.C. on October 8th-10th at the Javits Center.
Unigroup will be obtaining passes for this show and should be handing them
out at our September meeting. Our U.S. Mail newsletter which is currently
arriving around N.Y.C. also contains an on-site pass. Visit the show web

Unigroup will be exhibiting at Unix Expo and we need your help to staff
our booth. PLEASE contact us (via Email to uniboard@unigroup.org) if you
can spare any time to help us staff our booth. Our goal at the show is to
promote the user group and our meetings.
Unigroup will also be holding a meeting at Unix Expo tentatively scheduled
for Wednesday, October 9th at 5:30pm after the show.
Our topic is:
Strategic Technology Issues in the Unix Industry.
Our speaker is:
Doug Michels,
Chief Technical Officer and Executive Vice President,
SCO.
This special event meeting will be free and open to the public.

3. UNIGROUP INFORMATION

Unigroup is one of the oldest and largest Unix User's Groups serving the
Greater New York City Regional Area since the early 1980s. Unigroup is
not-for-profit, vendor-neutral and member funded. Unigroup holds regular
and special event meetings throughout the year on technical topics relating
to Unix and the Unix User Community. Unigroup is also the Greater NYC
Regional Area Affiliate of UniForum - an International Unix Users Group.
Thanks to Chase/Chemical Bank, Unigroup holds regular meetings planned for
the Third THURSDAY of Odd Months at Chase/Chemical Bank, 55 Water Street, NYC.
Planned meeting dates are: 9/19, 10/9 UnixExpo, 11/21, 1/16/97...

5. NEWSLETTER
----------
Unigroup's printed newsletter is sent out to people on our U.S. Mail mailing
list. The newsletter contains information such as meeting announcements,
technical and non-technical articles and recent UNIX security advisories.
Ross Ziskind is the editor of the Unigroup newsletter. Keep an eye out for
the next issue.
To keep the newsletter going, the two biggest problems to overcome are:
a) Volunteers to see that it gets out
b) Content material
If you have any ideas or can help contribute to our newsletter, please make
them known at our meetings and/or let us know by EMail. If you know anyone
who has experience in sending out a newsletter, we can always use some good
advice. Ross can be reached via email to editor@unigroup.org.
We are also looking for an individual who can take over most of the
editorial work for the newsletter as our current editor's time has become
extremely scarce. All interested parties please notify us immediately.
