             -------------------------------
Topic: Switching LANs, VLANs and ELANs
             -------------------------------

Speakers: Debby Goldman and John Garrison from Xylan (http://www.xylan.com)

Main Presentation:
------------------

As many of our members know, there is a revolution brewing in LAN
technology. Now that everyone has a PC powerful enough to process graphics,
the old 10MB Ethernet LAN, which once looked like a high-speed data highway,
is looking more like the LIE on a Sunday afternoon trip back from the
Hamptons. Bandwidth is the issue, and there's only so much to go around.

One of the current approaches to breaking the bandwidth bottleneck involves
the use of high-speed switches operating at the MAC, OSI layer 2 level.
These "switches," implemented in hardware, are used to establish parallel
paths between LAN users. This approach has the capability of multiplying
available bandwidth by an order of magnitude. It also offers the
opportunity of implementing a Virtual LAN (VLAN), where membership is
defined by functional affiliation rather than physical location.

Our speakers for this month's meeting are Debby Goldman and John Garrison
from Xylan Corporation, a young firm headquartered in Calabasas, California.
Xylan is a leading provider of high-bandwidth switching systems that enhance
the performance of existing LAN's and facilitate migration to next
generation networking technologies such as ATM. Our speakers, in their talk
"VLANs don't work... Unless...," will deal with these topics, among others:

    - What exactly is a VLAN?
    - What is an ELAN?
    - How do they differ?
    - What are the benefits of VLANs to business users, LAN administrators,
      and managers?
    - Getting there -- a migration strategy to move from hierarchical
router-centric LANs to flat, switch-centric LANs.

In addition to presenting their talk and answering questions, Debby and
John will be giving away copies of Xylan's new publication, "The Switching
Book". This is a very informative, 183-page large-format glossy book that
covers the general topic of LAN switches and related technologies. No one
who is involved with networking -- either directly or indirectly -- who
wants to understand the new technology should miss this presentation!

Debby Goldman is the N.Y. Territory Manager for Xylan, and has been selling
inter-networking solutions in N.Y.C. for seven years. Before that, she
managed an inter-networking group for Manufacturer's Hanover, and worked as
an independent consultant for AT&T, Johnson & Johnson, Bell Labs, and
DoubleDay Publishing. John Garrison is a Systems Engineer for Xylan.

                Room Location Specifics:
Enter the building at Old Slip. To get to the South
Tower of the complex, you enter the building at Old
Slip at the "North Tower" doors. This entrance is
is immediately to the right of the main entrance,
towards Water Street. Go past the guard's desk
(mentioning you are heading for Unigroup) to the
elevator bank and go to the 13th floor.
When you get to the 13th floor, follow the signs leading
                   you to the meeting room.

The signs will lead you from the elevator, through a set
of doors, then past the cafeteria. If the entrance
doors near the elevator on the 13th floor are locked
(may happen after 6pm), call the security desk using the
available telephone, and they will radio the guard on
the 13th floor to let you in. After the cafeteria, you
see another "lobby" area. Walk past the cash machines,
make a left and look for a sign marking the meeting room.

5. NEWSLETTER
        ----------

Unigroup's printed newsletter is sent out to people on our U.S. Mail mailing
list. The newsletter contains information such as meeting announcements,
technical and non-technical articles and recent UNIX security advisories.
Ross Ziskind is the editor of the Unigroup newsletter. Keep an eye out for
the next issue.

To keep the newsletter going, the two biggest problems to overcome are:
        a) Volunteers to see that it gets out
        b) Content material

If you have any ideas or can help contribute to our newsletter, please make
them known at our meetings and/or let us know by EMail. If you know anyone
who has experience in sending out a newsletter, we can always use some good
advice. Ross can be reached via email to editor@unigroup.org.

We are also looking for an individual who can take over most of the
editorial work for the newsletter as our current editor's time has become
extremely scarce. All interested parties please notify us immediately.
Thanks.

I hope to see you all at Unigroup's July 1996 meeting...
