MEETING INTRODUCTION

Unigroup is pleased to announce our September 2015 meeting on Infiniband and Ethernet High Speed Interconnection Fabrics. Current architectures have these technologies running at 100Gbit/s, with roadmaps heading towards speeds of 400Gbit/s in the near future.

Our September 2015 speaker is from Mellanox Technologies, a manufacturer of both High Speed Infiniband and High Speed Ethernet products.

   RSVP deadline is usually the night before the meeting day.

   Note: RSVP is requested for this location to make sure the guard
         will let you into the building.  RSVP also helps us to
         properly plan the meeting (food, drinks, handouts,
         seating, etc.) and speed up your sign-in at the meeting.
         If you forget to RSVP prior to the meeting day, you may
         still be able to show up and attend our meeting, however,
         we cannot guarantee what building security will do if
         you are "not on the list".

   Entrance is at the corner of 3rd Avenue and 7th Street.

   Building lobby sign-in is required at the guard's desk.
   Enter the building, check in with the guard at the lobby for
     directions to the Unigroup Meeting Room.

   Nearest mass transit stations are:
     '6'           to Astor Place (stops right at The Cooper Union),
                   then walk 1 block East and 1 block South.
     'R'           to 8th Street, then walk about 2 blocks East
                   then 1 block South.
     '4/5/N/Q'     to Union Square, then walk South and East.
                   or transfer to the downtown '6' to Astor Place.
     'B/D/F/V'     to Broadway-Lafayette, then walk North and East.

Topic: High Speed Interconnects: Infiniband & Ethernet: 100Gbps and Beyond

Introduction & Description of Talk:

Mellanox will present and discuss interconnect technologies. We will review Infiniband and Ethernet technologies, implementation, use cases, advantages, and future. We will review the latest products and solutions from both hardware and software perspective, and discuss relevance and implementations in Financial Services, big data and analytics, and other use cases.

InfiniBand (IB) is a networking communications standard used in high-performance computing, features very high throughput and very low latency. It is used for data interconnect both among and within computers. InfiniBand is also utilized as either a direct, or switched interconnect between servers and storage systems, as well as an interconnect between storage systems. It is the most commonly used interconnect in supercomputers and high performance computing. Mellanox and Intel manufacture InfiniBand host bus adapters and network switches. Mellanox IB cards are available for Oracle Solaris, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Microsoft Windows, HP-UX, VMware ESX. It is designed to be scalable and uses a switched fabric network topology. As an interconnect, IB competes with Ethernet and proprietary technologies. Alternative network transport technologies include Fibre Channel and Ethernet. The technology is promoted by the InfiniBand Trade Association.

Ethernet is a computer networking technology. It was commercially introduced in 1980 and first standardized in 1983 as IEEE 802.3 and has since been refined to support higher bit rates and longer link distances. The Ethernet standards comprise several wiring and signaling variants of the OSI physical layer. Ethernet data transfer rates have been increased to the latest 100 gigabits per second (Gbit/s), with 400 Gbit/s expected ~2017. Systems communicating over Ethernet divide a stream of data into shorter pieces called frames. Each frame contains source and destination addresses and error-checking data so that damaged data can be detected and re-transmitted. As per the OSI model, Ethernet provides services up to and including the data link layer.

We will present and discussion interconnect technologies. We will review Infiniband and Ethernet technologies, implementation, use cases, advantages, and future. We will review the latest products and solutions from both hardware and software perspective, and discuss relevance and implementations in Financial Services, big data and analytics, and other use cases.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY

Eitan Rabin is Sr. Director, Advanced Support Solutions at Mellanox. Eitan has been with the company since year 2000. Eitan is currently working out of our NYC office, supporting high priority projects, advanced development customers, and FSI HFT low level solutions. Prior to his current role, he served as Field Application Engineer and as a Driver and Firmware Developer. He is a graduate of the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in Israel. Fun fact: Eitan joined Mellanox as its first support engineer. The company now has over 2000 employees and our support org is several hundred people globally.
