MEETING INTRODUCTION
Unigroup's March 2013 meeting will continue on our Post-SuperStorm Sandy theme, and will be on Remote Access / Remote Desktop.
At past meetings, we have discussed VNC / Virtual Network Computing and its use for Remote KVM (Keyboard/Video/Mouse) / Remote Desktop. NX is another alternative, which makes use of the existing X11 stack found on most Unix/Linux/BSD graphical systems.
We are also planning a future talk on Failover+Multipath Network Routing, which should happen given speaker availability.
We are also working on a Field-Trip meeting on Data Centers, to hopefully include a Data Center Tour. We are currently working with a local Datacenter Vendor, to hopefully hold this meeting in the upcoming months. This meeting may happen on a non-3rd Thursday too, so keep an eye out for it.

RSVP deadline is usually the night before the meeting day.
Note: RSVP is requested for this location to make sure the guard
will let you into the building. RSVP also helps us to
properly plan the meeting (food, drinks, handouts,
seating, etc.) and speed up your sign-in at the meeting.
If you forget to RSVP prior to the meeting day, you may
still be able to show up and attend our meeting, however,
we cannot guarantee what building security will do if
you are "not on the list".

Building lobby sign-in is required at the guard's desk.
Enter the building, check in with the guard at the lobby for
directions to Unigroup Meeeting Room.
Nearest mass transit stations are:
'6' to Astor Place (stops right at The Cooper Union),
then walk 1 block East and 1 block South.
'R' to 8th Street, then walk about 2 blocks East
then 1 block South.
'4/5/6/R/N/Q' to Union Square, then walk South and East.
'B/D/F/V' to Broadway-Lafayette, then walk North and East.
Or take the new connection to the uptown '6'!
Free street parking in the area becomes available at 6pm.
There are also parking lots on Broadway, at (or just south of)
Astor Place (8th Street).

Topic: Linux Remote Desktop Access using NoMachine NX
Introduction & Description of Talk:
NX provides Remote Desktop access for Linux with the same performance as Windows Remote Desktop Client. All of the encryption used with NX may be provided with OpenSSH. NX compression reduces X11 latency and traffic, and adapts bandwith usage depending on network conditions.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Robin Polak (http://robinpolak.com)
Robin Polak began his career in the academic field for 10 years, entering into IT as a Network Technician where he maintained the cabling plant for Manhattan College. From there he progressed into overseeing the network operations for two campuses as Manhattan College and the College of Mount Saint Vincent joined forces. Upon the dissolution of the joint department at which point the colleges became once again separate entities he took on the role of Network Manager at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Since then, he has entered the world of High Frequency Trading with his current employer Lime Brokerage. Here he is part of a well oiled team which supports the day to day data center operations as well as supporting the staff at the NYC-based business office. Through this journey in IT, he has grown as a capable Linux Administrator and honed his skills in managing complex network environments. His preference lies in Linux Administration. He really enjoys working with free and open source software to craft enterprise class solutions to business needs. In addition to working with the software, he also enjoys taking part in the community through attending and contributing to user groups such as Unigroup, NYCBUG, and NYLUG to name a few. Like many IT workers, he also has had the pleasure of becoming intimately familiar with Microsoft Corporation's product offerings as well, including MS-Exchange, MS-Office, as well as their wide variety of Windows flavors. Robin is a Unigroup member, and also serves on Unigroup's Board of Directors.

Unigroup is a Professional Technical Organization and User Group, and its members pay a yearly membership fee. For Unigroup members, there is usually no additional charges (ie. no meeting fees) during their membership year. Non-members who wish to attend Unigroup meetings are usually required to pay a "Single Meeting Fee".

Complimentary Food and Refreshments will be served. This includes "wraps" such as turkey, roast beef, chicken, tuna and grilled vegetables as well as assorted salads (potato, tossed, pasta, etc), cookies, brownies, bottled water and assorted beverages.
However, our long-time cateror is no longer in business so the food service will be changing! We may have Pizza and Soft-Drinks at this meeting instead of the catered food.
