MEETING INTRODUCTION

Unigroup's January 2008 meeting will be an informal discussion about experiences (ie. war stories) with the freely available CentOS and Fedora Linux/GNU Operating Systems. Various issues seen during the past year of CentOS (spanning versions 4.4 / 4.5 / 4.6, including kernel panics and failed upgrades from 4.x to 5.x), and Fedora 7 / 8 (including kernel panics and failed upgrades from 7 to 8 with workarounds) will be discussed.

** Unigroup Board of Director Elections: Unigroup will be holding our annual elections for our Board of Directors at this meeting. If you are interested in running/volunteering for the Unigroup Board, please contact us immediately!

This building is located on the West side of the street. Cross Streets: Between Rector (South) and Carlisle (North) Streets.

Our meeting location is in the Lower West Corner of Downtown, North of the Battery Tunnel, South of the Downtown Hotel, North of the Resturant, East of West Street, and West of Greenwich Street. Walking West on Rector Street from Broadway, you pass Church, Greenwich then Washington Streets.

There are multiple blocks of parking lots right there, between Washington and Greenwich Streets, starting at the Battery Tunnel and extending North for a number of blocks.

Nearest mass transit stations, in order, are the '1/9' (Rector Street), 'R/W' (Rector Street) and the '4/5' (Wall Street).


PRESENTATION OUTLINE

This presentation will discuss various aspects of using CentOS over the past year, spanning versions 4.3 through 4.6 (but concentrating on issues with 4.4-4.5), and using Fedora 7 and 8.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY

Robert Weiner, is the President of Programming Plus, and the Executive Director of Unigroup of New York, Inc. Robert has been a user, developer, and system administrator working with Unix for over 25 years, and Linux for around 15 years, as well as a variety of other operating systems including: Xenix, BSD, VMS and DOS/Windows (going back to CP/M).

Robert holds Bachelor and Master of Engineering degrees (both in Electrical Engineering) from The Cooper Union in NYC, and is a New York State Licensed Professional Engineer. Robert founded Programming Plus, a Computer-Related Hardware and Software Consulting Business, over 22 years ago, and specializes in Administration, Development, Engineering, Integration and Support for Systems, Databases, Networks, Internet and Computer Security.

Robert has been a member of Unigroup since 1985, a member of the Unigroup Board of Directors since 1991, and has been Unigroup's Executive Director since 1992.

Robert was also a Founding Chapter Member and Board Member (for 10 years) of the NYC Metro Chapter of the ICCA - Independent Computer Consultants Association. Robert is also a member of a variety of other professional associations and user groups including: Encompass, IASA, IEEE, IEEE Consultants Networks, IEEE Computer Society, NSPE, NYSSPE, and various other local/regional user groups.
