Unigroup of New York is pleased to announce that we will be presenting one of our industry's leaders at our UNIX EXPO meeting. Doug Michels, a co-founder of The Santa Cruz Operation will share his views with us on some of the many tough strategic problems that face all of us in the UNIX world. Doug will be speaking in an open-ended format, and so he won't be limited to a narrow set of topics. In general he will cover some or all of these topics:
Doug is well qualified to deal with these issues. He co-founded The Santa Cruz Operation, Inc. (SCO) in 1979. Since then he has played a central role in both the company's growth and in the worldwide computer industry movement toward the implementation of standards and open systems.
At SCO, he is the principal architect of SCO's technology strategy. He also oversees strategic alliances with major software and hardware manufacturers. He was influential in the purchase of UNIXware from Novell in 1995, thereby giving ownership of the UNIX source technologies to SCO. He is also a driving force behind SCO's Internet strategy.
In 1993, he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by AT&T and UNIX System Laboratories for his contributions to the development and commercialization of the UNIX System. He was one of the original founders of UniForum and served as UniForum's International President from 1989-1990 and as a member of its Board of Directors from 1981-1991. UniForum awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. He is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz, with Honors in Computer and Information Science.
